History
Discover Roberts School Flats, a beautifully restored piece of Indianapolis history.
In 1936, with New Deal funding and the help of local philanthropists James and Henrietta Roberts, a revolutionary building was born: James E. Roberts School #97. Designed in the Art Moderne style, it was the first school in the city built specifically for children with physical handicaps, featuring state-of-the-art amenities like an interior wheelchair ramp system, a hydrotherapy pool, and even an elevator.
After serving the city for 50 years, the school was slated for demolition. But Core Redevelopment stepped in, saving and meticulously transforming this landmark into 33 unique apartments. Today, Roberts School Flats stands as a testament to thoughtful design and purposeful history, with original features carefully maintained to honor its unique past.
